According to reports, Bryan Preston Gibbins, a former Lewisville police officer, was indicted by a Denton County grand jury on child sex abuse and possession of child pornography charges. The 38-year-old man has been held in Denton County Jail ever since he was arrested on January 29, 2020. According to county records, Gibbins was charged with eight counts of child sex abuse charges and 15 counts of possession of child pornography charges.
Reports show that Gibbins met the 15-year-old victim while working on a criminal case in which she was the victimized party. According to an arrest affidavit, Gibbins started a sexual relationship with the unnamed girl in early 2019, and it carried on until January 9, 2020, mere weeks before his arrest. The affidavit shows that Gibbins would meet the victim to provide her transportation to and from school, and would communicate with her using social media apps such as Snapchat.
This is a heartbreaking case on many levels. Police officers are supposed to be trusted public servants who protect our men, women, and children from harm. The fact that this individual used his power and place in law enforcement to contact a previously victimized child and engage in a sexual relationship with them is clearly abusive, and behavior like this has no place in society.
Sex crimes are heinous crimes that leave a lasting impact on victims. Because of the nature of this type of crime, it is clear why it is so fiercely prosecuted and heavily enforced not only in the state of Texas, but all around the country. The consequences of being convicted of this type of crime extends far beyond jail time. In addition to facing years behind bars, Bryan Gibbins may also face other collateral consequences such as being barred from certain types of employment, inability to live in close proximity to a school, or being forced to register as a sex offender. These types of consequences may seem strict to some, but the state must do everything in its power to ensure they are protecting the children of Texas.
